MEASUREMENT OF WALL THICKNESS OF CONTAINER GLASS

WEAR-FREE MEASURING PROBES, NON-CONTACT MEASURING DEVICES

Wall thickness measurement is one of the most important tasks regarding in-line inspections of lightweight container glass. This happens in inspection machines equipped with a star wheel for passingthe bottles, known as stop-and-rotate machines. They are located on the so-called cold end of glass production lines. Other parameters that can be constantly monitored by inspection machines, for example, cracks, finish inspection, height and shape of container glass..

Inspection machines equipped with Precitec sensors can precisely determine wall thicknesses of a few thousandths of a millimeter  - in a contact-free mode. Extraordinarily high dynamic response and the outstanding signal-to-noise ratio of CHRocodile sensors ensure the best measuring results on different highly reflective and strongly inclined surfaces. Due to the high efficiency of wear-free measuring probes als well non-round products are measured. With spot size of only a few hundredths of a millimeter in diameter, even the smallest defects are detected in glass.

Chromatic confocal CHRocodile sensors from Precitec Optronik therefore use sophisticated technology for signal evaluation, demonstrating their particular strength to strongly scattering or semi-transparent surfaces where other well-known 3D measurement methods may fail.

When container glass is measured inline using inspection machines, bottles are rotating in pockets of a star wheel about their  axis. During a full rotation the glass thickness is measured by compact chromatic measuring heads. During the measuring process, the bottles must not be in rest, a reliable measurement also takes place during their autorotation. Another advantage is that CHRocodiles, unlike other non-contact measuring devices are able to measure thin walls within an larger measuring range and at greater distances and angles.
